When working with clients, I initially emphasize tracking macros. Macronutrients (aka macros) include protein, carbohydrates, and fats. This week I want to dive into some of the basics when it comes to Carbohydrates (aka: Carbs). In case you missed last weeks blog, be sure to read up on Macro: Protein: https://coachingwithabby.com/blog/macro-protein/
Carbs support energy (especially when it comes to strength training), thyroid + sex hormones, mood, sleep, and supports overall satiety and decreases cravings.
Count me in, right!
A lot of people struggle initially because so many of us are brainwashed into thinking we should do life without carbs. Trust me, I am a nutrition professional and even I’ve been there. So what’s the scoop?
How much carb you need depends on a lot of factors: activity level, medical + diet history, hormone health, etc. For many, carb recommendations can range from 30-60% of one’s total calories. I definitely suggest working with a nutrition pro to help you best determine how much carb you should be consuming: https://coachingwithabby.com/about/
If you are a female, I generally recommend no less than 160-180g Carbs/day to support thyroid + sex hormones + healthy menstrual cycles.
As always, I suggest you create AWARENESS by tracking your foods on an App. How much carb are you currently consuming? From there I again suggest you work with a nutrition pro to titrate your carbs up (or down). Carbs come from vegetables and fruits. But let’s be real. Even if you chow down on BOWLS of broccoli and carrots you still won’t get close to your carb goal. Be sure to add in starchy carbs like: oats, potatoes, rice, quinoa, squash, beans, etc.
As you begin to increase carbs in your diet you should notice an improvement in your sleep, energy, performance, body composition, and a decrease in extreme hunger/cravings.
